The position of European States regarding illegal immigration has changed significantly since 2015, the Prime Minister’s chief advisor for security told the Friday evening programme of the public service television news channel M1.

György Bakondi said: while the flow of migration was earlier received most favourably and the border protection activities of the Hungarians were condemned, all the nation states have now begun their own defence efforts.

The only thing that has not really changed is the position of the European Union which finds itself increasingly at odds with the aspirations of the nation states, he said upon stating his view.

According to the chief advisor for security, in contrast to their statements, Italy and Greece have failed to fulfil their duties as the protection of the Schengen borders, too, would have been part of their responsibilities.

Mr Bakondi took the view: the big question is whether state agencies will ever reach the stage where they decide that the migrants rescued from boats should not be taken to Italy or Spain, but back to the Libyan and Moroccan shores.

The Prime Minister’s chief advisor for security said: an ever smaller percentage of illegal immigrants would be eligible for political asylum.
