The statements made by European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos are an invitation to migrants, György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said in response to the statements of the member of the European Commission on the Tuesday evening programme of the public service television news channel M1.

The Commissioner said at the Strasbourg plenary session of the European Parliament that it is a legal as well as a moral obligation of the Member States of the European Union to take part in the EU mechanism which is designed to serve the distribution of 160 thousand asylum-seekers. He stated that unless some progress is made within a month, infringement procedures will be instituted against the countries concerned.

Mr Bakondi pointed out in response to this that these statements reassure migrants that there is a place for everyone in Europe.

This is not true, he said, but the “suction effect” of statements such as these has been quite evident since 2015.

According to the chief advisor, EU officials were not elected in order to threaten the Member States with severe sanctions from time to time. It would be wiser to consider why EU Member States are reluctant to fulfil the mandatory quotas, he added.
