The Ministry of Agriculture held a Hungaricum Day at the Sziget Festival’s “Civil Sziget” in Budapest on Thursday to promote Hungarian national treasures among young people from at home and abroad, the Minister of State for Environmental Affairs, Agricultural Development and Hungaricums said.

Russian Measures have Negligible Effect

The direct effects of the Russian measures on Hungarian agricultural exports are negligible, and primarily cause actual difficulties only to enterprises that export exclusively or to a major extent to Russia. According to figures for 2013 and 2014, the products included on the list of banned imports include only a minor proportion, some 30 percent of the products we export to Russia, and represent only 1 percent of total Hungarian agricultural exports.

Children to Receive over 45 Million Portions of Fruit via the School Fruit Programme

The School Fruit Programme will continue in the 2014-15 school year, within the framework of which more than 45 million portions of domestically grown fruit and one-hundred percent fruit juice will be distributed to students in grades 1-6 of the country’s primary schools, Deputy Head of Division Márton Bittsánszky from the Ministry of Agriculture stressed at a conference on the Programme in Budapest on Wednesday.

Hungarian-Bosnian Agricultural Treaty Signed

Hungarian-Bosnian agricultural talks held in Budapest at the Ministry of Agriculture ended successfully on Tuesday with the signing of an Agricultural Treaty between the two countries. The Treaty was signed before members of the press by Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture Sándor Fazekas and Bosnian Minister for Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Boris Tucic.

Interactive Wine Cellar opens in Szekszárd

The interactive Garay Wine Cellar has opened its doors in Szekszárd. The complex, which aims to be a unique tourist attraction and was developed in one of the city’s oldest wine cellars, was realised with some two-hundred million forints (EUR 645,000) in EU funding.

The V4+4 agriculture ministers, attending a session in Budapest on Tuesday, welcomed the EUs ruling to allow member states to decide on the cultivation of GMOs within their own national sphere of authority, the Minister of Agriculture emphasised at a press conference following the meeting. The decision is a significant success for Hungarian agrarian diplomacy, Minister Sándor Fazekas added.

Hungarian diplomacy could achieve a significant result in view of the fact that the Council of EU Environment Ministers is expected to adopt new regulations allowing member states to decide independently on the authorisation or banning of genetically modified plants at its meeting today. Accordingly, it would become easier for member states to ban the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops, because following the decision each country will be able to decide individually whether to authorise or prohibit the use of such agricultural seeds for cultivation. In future, such bans, which are a fundamental requirement to ensure the continued preservation of Hungary’s GMO-free status, may not only be issued for environmental and health reasons, but also on the basis of other criteria, such as for economic or social reasons.
